Topic/Guest Speaker:
Mindfulness-Based Reduction Therapy with Peggy Sheehan, M.D.
Background:
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) combines meditation techniques with psychoeducation in order to improve your capacity to cope with stress, reduce physical and psychological symptoms, and maximize your ability to thrive through all of life's circumstances. Intensive training in mindfulness practices enables participants to look deeply into their own hearts and minds, where they find both the causes of their suffering and the possibility to choose greater happiness whether or not their actual physical circumstances change. Recent tinnitus research has suggested that therapies such as MBSR can provide significant benefits for those that are distressed by their symptoms.
Dr. Sheehan is a graduate of Johns Hopkins Medical School and has been a practicing pediatrician for over 20 years. She has also studied and practiced meditation for 20 years. In 2005, Dr. Sheehan trained at University of Massachusetts Medical School to facilitate the Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn curriculum of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). She has been teaching the program for the Kaiser Permanente Centers for Complementary Medicine for the past 5 years.
