In November we talked about what may hinder habituation to tinnitus even when using reliable sound therapies. We used an article from Tinnitus Today written by Dr. Stephen Nagler. External barriers may be keeping tinnitus diaries, talking often about your tinnitus, going on the Internet for information, participating in support boards on the Internet. Once you have a successful program in place, give up searching and talking and concentrating on tinnitus. Habituation will happen.
We heard from one of our members who said he is no longer bothered by his tinnitus. His advice is to spend more time outdoors! He did wear sound generators for two years so he had a good foundation. Being outdoors and being distracted by wind, children's voices, streams, beautiful sights can make an incredible difference in what your brain chooses to listen to.
Let's be open-minded. There are treatments out there that we haven't discussed. Perhaps because I have my bias. I will try to open my mind and present some treatments that we haven't talked about such as tinnitus notch therapy. This has been around for a long time - let's find out what it is all about. I will try to be objective in my assessment. In the meantime, enjoy your time with your friends and family and revel in the holidays.
