PRMRP Sample Letter & Members of Appropriations Committees, Key Senate Members (By State)

Hello,

Thank you for taking time to make this letter your own – your involvement means so much to us and sustaining the future of quality tinnitus research.

In the letter below, you’ll see sections in brackets and written in all capital letters. This is where you will personalize the letter by including your story and perspective. For instance, at the bottom of the letter:

You will replace [ENTER NAME HERE] with your name. In my case, [ENTER NAME HERE] will become Torryn Brazell.

For the section that asks [ENTER 3-4 SENTENCES ABOUT HOW TINNITUS HAS AFFECTED YOUR LIFE], please write 3-4 sentences about how tinnitus has disrupted your quality of life. Some examples could be:

How it’s effected your mental health
How it’s effected your sleep or ability to focus
How it’s effected your relationships or ability to socialize in public settings

Thank you again for your help – and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to let us know by emailing tinnitus@ata.org.

Sincerely,

Torryn Brazell

Sample Letter for your Congress Member

Dear [ENTER NAME OF CONGRESS MEMBER HERE],

I am one of the approximately 26 million adults in the United States living with tinnitus, a condition that currently has no cure and no universally effective treatment. Often categorized by a ringing in the ears (or other sound), this condition affects people of all ages, including active military members and Veterans, and can trigger anxiety, insomnia, depression, and suicidal thoughts.

I’ve lived with tinnitus for [ENTER NUMBER OF YEARS YOU’VE LIVED WITH TINNITUS] years. Tinnitus has affected my life in many ways. [ENTER 3-4 SENTENCES ABOUT HOW TINNITUS HAS AFFECTED YOUR LIFE].

For years, the Department of Defense Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (DOD PRMRP) included tinnitus among its research topics, but as of two years ago it was removed, despite tinnitus being the number one disability among Veterans. As there is no cure, this is a devastating blow to all of us suffering from the condition.

As you consider the budget and funding for the next fiscal year, I ask you reinstate to tinnitus to the Department of Defense’s Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program.

As previously stated, tinnitus affects millions – but it’s hard to quantify the emotional impact it has on sufferers, as well as our family and friends. It’s a hidden disability that impacts everything about one’s life – but with your support and funding from the DOD PRMRP, I believe we can one day find a cure for tinnitus.

Sincerely,

[ENTER YOUR NAME HERE]
