Our History, Philosophy and More…

The core purpose of the American Tinnitus Association is to promote relief, prevent, and find cures for tinnitus, evidenced by its core values of compassion, credibility, and responsibility.

Since 1971, the ATA has been the nation’s foremost and trusted organization committed to finding cures for tinnitus and improving patient care and support. Our commitment demands focus, determination, strategy and resources. The ATA brings together patients, researchers, healthcare professionals, industry partners, and lawmakers to advance public understanding of tinnitus and fund vital tinnitus research. Progress toward cures is ongoing and will be achieved through advances in technology and science, areas we contribute to through awarding grants to innovative investigators.

We fulfill our mission by: (1) funding targeted research projects; (2) providing education and meaningful support for the tinnitus community; (3) advocating for effective public policies focused on advancing scientific understanding of tinnitus and its prevention; and (4) collaborating with others to promote awareness, encourage prevention, and to ultimately silence tinnitus.

As a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit association, the ATA is committed to supporting the estimated 26 million adults in the U.S. living with tinnitus. We know that tinnitus can be highly intrusive, stressful, and difficult to manage on one's own. We also know that patients face many challenges in finding quality healthcare to manage their tinnitus. The ATA works to improve the tinnitus patient experience through education, empowerment, and advocacy. Our goal is simple: help patients today by improving access to the most-validated management tools and interventions, and fund research to find cures.
